As we close one year and prepare to embrace the next with hope and anticipation, I find myself reflecting on my first four months at the Fort Payne Chamber of Commerce. It has truly been a whirlwind—a blur of introductions, ribbon cuttings, events, and navigating new opportunities with both excitement and determination.
One of the most profound takeaways from these early months has been witnessing the deep dedication of so many individuals who care about this town. I’ve been inspired by the countless ways you go above and beyond to support Fort Payne and its surrounding areas, and that encouragement has fueled my commitment to serve our community to the best of my ability.
If there’s one insight I’d like to share, it’s this: I’ve come to deeply appreciate the people behind the businesses and the vital role they play in our town. As employers, these businesses aren’t just shops and service- they are opportunities. They provide jobs for so many people, creating livelihoods and strengthening the fabric of our community. Knowing the people behind these industries has filled me with gratitude for the work they do.
Walking into a small shop—whether to visit or make a purchase—and being greeted by a friendly face has given me a greater understanding of the effort and resilience required to run a business. It’s not just about the products or services; it’s about the stories, challenges, and triumphs of the people who make up our local economy.
This realization has deepened my appreciation for spending money locally. Now, more than ever, I see the positive ripple effects of those purchases—how they strengthen our community, support our neighbors, and reinvest in Fort Payne. My hope is to encourage each of you to do the same. Get to know your local shop owners. Build those relationships. In a time when inflation impacts us all, there’s comfort in knowing your money stays within our community, helping it thrive.
As we begin a new year, I am filled with gratitude for the journey ahead and for the privilege of working alongside the incredible members of our chamber. Thank you for your support, encouragement, and commitment to Fort Payne. I wish you and your loved ones a joyful and prosperous New Year.
Warm regards,
Jessica Townsel
