Little River Canyon Center Camps
What’s there to do around here you ask? Plenty!
Last week my children attended day camp at Little River Canyon Center, right here in Fort Payne, AL. There were children from various states attending this fun educational camp. My children looked forward to going and had plenty to talk about when they were picked up.Cindi Fitzpatrick, JSU Field School Instructor, lead the class with the help of Dr. Niki Wayner, Assistant Director of JSU Field Schools. Dr. Waynor is a Veterinarian and has extensive experience working with the Raptor, Bird of Prey. Other staff at the Canyon Center are Pete Conroy, EPIC Director, Anna Lindsey, Events Coordinator and Steve White, Education Assistant.
Jacksonville State University (JSU) Field Schools were established in 1992 and in 2009 JSU opened Little River Canyon Center. Little River Canyon Center serves as the National Park Service headquarters and also an educational basefor the Field Schools. Program goals are to cultivate a comprehension of Alabama’s natural andcultural significance, celebrate diversity, and foster stewardship of the natural world.Instructors apply immersion-based learning, Natural History interpretation and outdoor adventure to create uniqueprograms that are not only educational but extremely fun.
The facility features a Grand Hall, HD movie theater, gift shop, natural history library, exhibits, classrooms, back deck, outdoor amphitheater and trails for both education and adventure. It is available to rent for meetings, social gatherings, corporate retreats and other special events.
The building itself is educational as it is LEED (Leadership for Energy and Environmental Design) Silver Certified structure that utilizes geothermal heating and cooling, recycled materials, added insulation and many other innovative and sustainable design elements.
The Canyon Center hosts field trips throughout the school year and teach classes such as Medicinal plants and Longleaf Needle Pine Basketry. The Canyon Center also offers interpretive hikes, children’s camps and activities, teacher/educator workshops, and various festivals/concerts.
Looking for a Summer camp for your 5th-7th grader? Canyon Camp for Children has availability for July 17th-20th. You can also participate every other Monday or Wednesday mornings in their ‘Tiny Tots’ or ‘Creative Kids’ workshops.
